Race Family Genealogy of Mount
Washington, Mass
by Donna Race Kneip
2006
descendent of Luther Ensign Race

The earliest known
recorded ancestor to this family came to New Amsterdam
in 1650. Andries Rees was a soldier with the Dutch West India Company and
considered to be a Dutch Immigrant, although Andries was from Lippstadt, Germany
on the River Lippe. The town of Rees was close
to the border of the Netherlands.
These families were referred to as “Lowland Dutch.” (Source:
The Rees/Race Family in America, Descendents of Andries Rees and Celitje Jans,
1997 by John Race Powers and William Benton Race)
Our Rees ancestors
disenfranchised with the Dutch control in New Amsterdam, traveled up the Hudson
River and came to live in the Albany area of Fort Orange.
Then moved easterly into the Hudson Valley along the New York
border with Massachusetts.
In 1682, Robert
Livingston located in the Hudson River Valley and established what was then referred
to as Livingston Manor, the wealthy Englishman claimed the lands occupied by
Dutch settlers who had purchased the land from the Indians in the 1650’s and
which one family had cultivated the land since 1692. The Livingston’s
tried to collect rent from these settlers and conflicts erupted into armed
attacks by both sides. (Source: History of Columbia
County, NY)
A Petition of 1751
to the Lieutenant-Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay asking for
assistance against the actions of Robert Livingston who was claiming the lands
west of Sheffield as part of his manor. The 40 signers of the petition included
Andrew and John Race. The petition was followed by a committee report in 1752
by Joseph Dwight, Colonel Bradford and Capt. Livermore which lists those
settled in the area. There were a total of 44 names which included the
following Races.
Andrew Race 1 house, 70 acres fenced, 60 acres improved, 16 years in
possession, 26 years cultivated.
Andrew Race 2nd 1 house, 30 acres
fenced, 15 acres improved, 3 years in possession, 3 years cultivated
Corn and Eph Race (Cornelius and Ephraim) 1 house
each, 60 acres fenced, 40 acres improved, 16 years in possession, 50 years
cultivated, 1 orchard, 2 bbls Syder.
John Race – son to Andrew 15 years possession, 15 years cultivated
William Race 1 house, 10 years possession, 10 years cultivated
William Race Jr. 1 house, 30 acres fenced, 16 acres improved
On April 14, 1755
violence erupted and William Rees/Race
Sr. was shot and killed by the Livingston’s
militia while trying to protect his home and
family. Six of the Dutch settlers in Mount Washington
were burned out of their homes, John Darby, Christopher Brasee, Henry Brasee,
Simon Burton and Andrew Race. These and other settlers had to flee to the residences
of their relatives who lived in nearby towns. (Source: Herbert
Keith Paper copied from Massachusetts Archives). It took officials 17 years to
resettle the land and pave the way for Mount Washington’s incorporation in 1779
as a township subject to the law of Massachusetts.
Race Mountain
in Mount Washington was named in his honor
according to family history. (photo of Race Mountain,
photographer unknown).
The brothers of
William Rees/Race settled in Egremont, Great Barrington and West Stockbridge,
MA. John Rees and his descendants
who settled in West Stockbridge kept the original spelling of their surname
Rees. Andrew and William and their descendants anglicized their name to Race
which was the original pronunciation. Many of Andrew’s descending from his son Nicholas Race remained in Egremont, and
some still remain in the area today. The only recorded descendants of William Race that lived in Mount Washington after 1790 were the children of his
grandson Phillip Race.
Phillip Race was born in Hillsdale, Columbia County, NY.
His father was Abraham Rees, son of William Rees and Marytje Freer. Abraham was the probable veteran of the French
Indian War, listed as being from Litchfield,
Ct., page 140, Connecticut
Soldiers, French and Indian War, 1755-62, Third Regiment, Col. Nathan Whiting,
Eighth Company, Capt. John Jeffry. Also listed on the Rolls of CT. Men in the
French and Indian War, by Albert C. Bates, Hartford, Ct.
1903, 1905. (2v.) as being born 173?.
Notes from the
“Herbert Keith Papers” state “Phillip
Race lived on the south end of Race Mountain, east side of road, owned 2 houses
there. William Race was a brother. Race living in south part of Mount Washington is Grandson.” The grandson Herbert
Keith was referring to was Martin Race,
son of Gilbert Race. Herbert Keith
and Martin Race were living in Mount Washington
at the same time during the late 1880’s.
Phillip Race and wife are shown on the 1820 Mount Washington US Fed.
Census with 3 sons and 3 daughters, and the 1830 US Fed Census in Salisbury, CT
with 2 sons and 3 daughters. While no vital record has been found for the
marriage of Phillip Race, according to a genealogy written by Sampson Cline in
1893, an Eve Cline daughter of Jacob Cline and Rebecca Daley b. 24 Oct 1784 in W. Copake, Columbia Co., NY married
a Gilbert Race. While that
information is inaccurate, an Eve whose maiden name was unknown did marry a
Race, and that Race was Phillip Race. Eve Race is buried by the side of her
husband Phillip in South Egremont, MA. Her
year of birth is some what off according to the cemetery transcriptions in S.
Egremont. I believe they were either difficult to read, or were transcribed
inaccurately as was Phillip’s.
Death Record Great
Barrington, MA. 1850 Vol. 48 page 25 states the
following: “Phillip Race date of death
May 26th, 77 years 11 mo 7 da, Widower, born Hillsdale, NY, Parents:
Abram and ______ Race. Died of Old Age.”
The documented
children of Phillip and Eve Race were Gilbert (by Herbert Keith Papers), John
b. 1815 (by Volk Genealogy), Ensign b.
1820, Andrew B. b. 1823 and Paulina b. 1818. The last three are
verified by marriage and death records. The other daughters and one son of
Phillip and Eve are unknown. No birth records have ever been found for any of
these sons or daughters. It is possible that the Charles Brace b. 1800 and died
in 1830, buried in Egremont next to Phillip and Eve is his oldest son, and that
this grave really reads Charles B. Race.

Abraham Rees, son of William and Marytje Rees m. Catherine (Unknown). They took residence in Nobletown (Hillsdale)
Columbia Co., NY. He is listed in the Tax Rolls of that town in 1767. Their
only recorded child Phillip Race was born and baptized by the Rev. Gideon
Bostwick on 10 May 1771 which matches Great Barrington Death Records. Recorded
in 1850 (most deaths recorded a year later).
Phillip Race and
his wife Eve lived in Mount Washington or
Egremont as early as 1808 possibly in the home of relatives. According to family records, Gilbert was born
in Mount Washington. They had the following
children.
Gilbert Race b. 20 March 1808 d. 20 April 1885 in Waukegan, Lake Co., IL. He married Huldah Noble Campbell, dau. of Robert Campbell and Huldah Noble in Mount
Washington. Gilbert and Huldah are both buried in Mount Washington Cemetery. Documented in the Peterson
Funeral Home Records in Waukegan, IL, it states that his body was shipped back to Massachusetts for
burial. All the children of Gilbert and Huldah moved to Chicago, Illinois.
John Race bon 1815 married Catharine
Volk, dau. of Garret and Elizabeth Volk. Lived in Great
Barrington and had children John H., Leman L., Eugene c., Mary A., and Catharine M. Race.
The sons of John and Catharine moved to Chicago,
IL. There they owned together
Race’s Oyster and Seafood Restaurant located on Madison Street (photo of 1879 Chicago

Pauline Race b. 1817 m. John H
Volk, son of Garret and Elizabeth Volk. They had children John
H., Thomas, Randolph, Ellen, Henrietta, Adeline and Florence. Pauline died 1857 in Charlemont MA.
Her son John H Volk lived in Chicago for a short
time, but relocated to Peoria,
IL, where he became a successful
Banker. (Volk Genealogy)
Ensign Race b. 08 Apr 1820 in Mount Washington, Berkshire Co., MA
married 1846 in Mt Washington Louisa Moore daughter of John and Clarissa “Clara” (Sparks)
Moore. She died 1898 and was buried in the Baptist Church Cemetery, Clifton
Park, Saratoga Co., NY. Ensign died 26 Nov 1863 in Egremont, MA
and was buried 03 Dec 1863 in Mt. Everett SE Cemetery, South Egremont,
Berkshire Co., MA. He resided in Great Barrington at the time of his marriage.
Ensign and Louisa were married by John Crawford, Methodist Minister, from Ashley Falls.
The US
Fed. Census of 1850 Mount Washington,
MA lists Ensign Race as 30 years
old. In the year 1850 Ensign Race was living next door to his Aunt, Lucy (Weed)
Kline, The widow of Jacob Kline, who was brother of Eve Kline, wife of Philip
Race. Death notice in Berkshire Courier (Keith) Papers cites death date as 03
Dec 1863 which has been assumed to be the burial date because probate records
cite his death date as 26 Nov 1863.
Children of Ensign Race and Louisa Moore
George E Race b. 1846
Ellen “Louisa, Lucy” Race b. 1849
Clarissa L Race b. 22 Sep 1850

Lived in Litchfield Co., CT. Had children Adelbert, George S and Helen. Andrew
died after 1894 in Winstead,
CT where he was listed in the
town directory.
Gilbert Race married Huldah
Noble Campbell in 1827 in Mount Washington
most likely at the home of her parents Robert Campbell and Huldah Noble. There
is no record of their marriage as the majority of the early town vital records
were burned in a fire in the Town Hall in the 1860’s. The year of their
marriage is based on the birth of their first son Charles Wesley Race in 1828.
They belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Gilbert was
involved in his community where he held one of the following offices:
School committee
1843-1852
Selectman 1854,
1858, 1862
Town Constable
1847, 1849, 1852, 1853, 1869
According to the
Assessment of Mount Washington May, 1861, his real estate was worth $1200 and
his personal estate $260
His son Martin
Race held one or more of these offices in the years of 1862, 1863, 1865, 1872,
1884, 1887.
Luther Race held
offices in 1852, 1854 and 1855 and Charles Wesley was Town Constable in 1852,
1853, 1854 and 1858.
Luther E. Race, son of Gilbert and
Huldah was a School Teacher. He left Mount Washington
in the year 1855. He met his wife Rebecca
Jane Kellogg in North Fairfield, Huron Co., OH (Rebecca Jane was a lineal
descendant of Stephen Hopkins and William Brewster who came on the Mayflower
1620 through her mother Polly Maria (Snow) Kellogg) while teaching school
there. He was most likely staying with his cousins the Mead’s. Luther and his
wife Rebecca removed to Chicago in 1858 where he
lived in Cicero, Il next door to Rebecca’s brother Artemas B.
Kellogg. He remained in that town for ten years and then relocated to Austin, which was annexed to the city of Chicago in 1900. He retired as a School
Teacher and owned a Real Estate Office on Lake Street. He invested heavily in Real
Estate and was considered to be quite wealthy according to the size of his
estate in 1899. At the time of his death in 1899 he still held title to the
family home and 30 acres in Mount Washington,
which was part of his mother’s estate. (photo of Article written in Chicago Tribune
1897)
Charles Wesley,
Cynthia Ann and Gilbert Jr had all moved to Chicago by 1860. Charles was married to Mary
Jane Pulver of Ancram, NY.
Cynthia married in
Chicago 1862 to
Norman S. Avery, who owned a Grocery Store. Gilbert Jr. married Rhoda Kellogg,
the sister of Luther’s wife in 1864 in North Fairfield, Huron Co., OH. Gilbert
Jr. was a School Teacher.
Sidney Race
married Julia E. Waugh who was born in Warren, Litchfield Co., CT. They are buried in Greenfield
Cemetery in Kenosha, WI.
They had twin daughters Maude and Mabel born in 1879. They died in 1944 and
1951, and neither had ever married. (copy of Sidney
and Julia’s obituaries)
Louisa married
Julia’s brother Charles C. Waugh. Charles fought in the Civil War and
contracted Malaria; he spent his adulthood in very poor health according to his
pension application. It is not known if they had any children.
Huldah Campbell
Race, wife of Gilbert died in 1869. Gilbert left Mount
Washington for Chicago shortly after 1870 with his son Sidney and
daughter Louisa and their families.
The only child
remaining in Mount Washington was his son
Martin Race, who I suppose stayed because of his wife’s ties to her family.
Lucy’s parents William and Samantha “Betsey” (Karner) Lindsey lived in Mount Washington until their deaths. Lucy died in Mount
Washington in 1887, Martin and children Charles E. and Truth Ann joined the
rest of the family in Chicago
shortly thereafter. Martin’s daughter Ellen had married David File and moved to
Albany, NY.
Martin never remarried; he died in Chicago
in 1909. The only grandchild that was listed in his Will was Arthur W Kline,
son of his deceased daughter Alice who had married Scott W Kline in Egremont, MA.
Alice died in
1882 at the age of 20 years old.
